After reading the report of Mr. Corey Modeste about the level of squash activity in NY, I consulted the 1981 MSRA yearbook last night.
The 1980 Boodles tournament, organized by Town Squash, had over 800 participants in 31 different draws. In addition there was a pro draw of 16 plus a qualifier to get into one of the four slots in the big draw. The pro draw had a total purse of $20,000 which in today’s dollars is probably equivalent to $75,000.
That’s just one tournament, singles only.
If Mr. Modeste believes that the numbers cited in his report posted yesterday on DSR are cause for celebration, I respectfully disagree.
