From A Reader:
Interesting observation by Mr. Hanscom about 2020.
It begs the question: how smart would the top young players be if they each diligently studied calculus , economics and physics 20 hours a week for 8 straight years? One thing is for sure- they'd make a lot more money upon graduation from an elite university than if they devoted themselves to pro squash .
The push-cart guy on the corner of Sixth Avenue and 54th Street selling soft pretzels and souvlaki makes more money than the no. 20 squash player in the world. And he doesn't have to worry about missing the next fifteen hour flight to Yokahama, economy class, to compete in some obscure tourney.
DSR posts the results of tournaments from around the globe, but the total purse and the winner's cut are almost never mentioned.
Why? It's probably because the purses are embarrassingly tiny and the importance of the results would be diminished in the minds of squash fans.
Top young players would be well advised to study hard, get a great education, and enjoy their squash as part of a balanced life where games are truly Re-Creation, not a Vocation.
Recalling the immortal words of Ken " The Hawk" Harrelson , former Red Sox outfielder, when he tried to make it in professional golf :
" I couldn't even pluck light dough off the tour. I was starving."
