Roy Orbison: 'It's Over'

by Guy Cipriano

Did anybody really believe that squash was going to become an Olympic sport in place of wrestling?

Wrestling was an original ancient Greek sport contested in ancient times. That means a great deal.

The IOC is all about money. They want women’s beach volleyball and other sports for which TV advertisers will pay big money for spots.

The sneaker, beer, automotive and soft drink/snack companies are not going to pay big dollars for spots during squash matches.

Few tv viewers  knows the players, the sport has a microscopic profile in America, and  the USA team would be defeated before the semi finals.

The whole thing was, and remains, a non- starter.

Time to Move On.

Hard to imagine that those who were involved could muster up energy for another bid unless the new IOC leaders are more transparent with the process.

  2. I agree Guy. Now that they are revamping the process, I still think it is a non-starter for these same reasons. Merry Christmas.

  3. Dear Guy!
Hope that all is well – you look so! As they say - better late than never!
    I hate to demur!
The problem is mainly SQUASH! We have not met the special challenge of Communicating the game at all! Although all the science, technology and supercomputation that would allow us to do so exists and is available from tax payer sources!. The Communication Problem is the single most important barrier to developing Squash and bringing it into the IOC! It is eminently solvable and can be brought into the Olympics - but we have to learn distributive leadership, first! These comments and threads from LinkedIn are a good start to the discussion which is vigorously underway but confidential!
However the 3 articles (from (1) Ferez'nSquashDocs, (2) LinkedIn-SquashEnthusiasts Group and (3) Squash Source) below represent and attempt to address different aspects of the confusion pervading the game that emerged in various conversations. There are many more but they are not yet and are in the public domain! If we adapt to the scientific, technical and computational recourse, that is in front of our noses, all these problems will vanish and Squash will thrive as a sport and in the Olympics! If not we will be fossilized! It is as simple as that!
    Best,
